Sample Insight Story for Sunly

Sunly Spotlights☀️

From Skeptic to Solar Advocate:

Reflecting on the Journey to Energy Independence

The painting behind Chris Spurrell captures a Newfoundland sunrise—golden light breaking over his childhood hometown, the sun illuminating the landscape in warm, hopeful tones. His niece painted this view from his bedroom window, and now it hangs in his Prince Edward Island office, a daily reminder of where he came from. These days, Chris thinks about the sun differently. It's not just nostalgia or art—it's the power source transforming homes across Atlantic Canada and beyond.

As Marketing Manager for Sunly Energy, Chris brings a unique perspective to his role. He wasn't always a solar evangelist. In fact, his journey began as many do—with skepticism, careful consideration, and the universal homeowner's question about solar power: "Is this really worth it?"

The Catalyst for Change

"I had been thinking about it for probably about five or six years," Chris reflects on his initial interest in solar power. Like many Canadians, he'd watched the technology evolve, prices fluctuate, and government incentives come and go. The tipping point came when he missed the federal $5,000 rebate by mere weeks—a friend even received their check and "rubbed it in my nose a little bit," he laughs. But rather than deterring him, this near-miss crystallized an important realization: incentives are just incentives. The real goal was energy independence and long-term savings.

Chris's decision-making process was methodical. "I'm a bit of a data nerd," he admits. "I wanted to understand not just the immediate savings, but the long-term implications—what this meant for my energy costs over the next decade, two decades."

Why Sunly Stood Apart

When it came time to choose a provider, Chris's decision was surprisingly swift. What distinguished Sunly wasn't just competitive pricing or technical expertise—though both were evident. It was their track record and commitment to staying power.

"Sunly practically dominates PEI in terms of solar," Chris explains. "Over the five years since the company has come into being, nearly 4,000 installs, over 3,000 of those are in PEI. That was huge for me, knowing that the experience was there." He'd learned about the founders—Ontario solar veterans with decades of combined experience—and understood "they knew their stuff."

Most importantly, Sunly offered assurance against his biggest fear: "They weren't going to be a fly-by-night company that was just going to install and then run. Where would I be stuck with my warranty or follow-up service?” This end-to-end commitment, from initial evaluation through installation and beyond, separated Sunly from competitors who might "sell you solar and then disappear."

"They weren't going to be a fly-by-night company that was just going to install and then run.”

— Chris Spurrelll, Sunly Customer-turned-team-member

From Customer to Champion

Chris's solar installation experience was so positive that when opportunity knocked, he made a career pivot that surprised even him. After years in government roles focused on lottery and casino marketing, he found himself drawn to Sunly's mission of powering energy independence. "It's been a long time that I've wanted to do something that's had greater purpose," he shares candidly.

Now, as Marketing Manager, Chris brings the authentic voice of a satisfied customer to his work. He understands the questions homeowners grapple with because he asked them himself. He knows the satisfaction of watching your meter run backward because he experiences it daily at his own home.

The Daily Battle and Sweet Victory

"I love and hate the same thing," Chris confesses about his new role. Every morning, he confronts the skeptics—the "keyboard warriors" spreading misinformation about solar being a scam or costing more than traditional electricity. "That stuff I hate," he admits, "just misinformation and jumping to conclusions."

But then comes the payoff that makes it all worthwhile: "What I love, of course, is when people do go solar and they do reap the benefits and they do see a decrease in their monthly spending." The vindication comes when satisfied customers jump into online debates to defend their experience. Chris recalls one New Brunswick customer who challenged a skeptic directly: "Well, in 10 years, we won't have a payment and we won't have a power bill. Will you?"

How it worked out for Chris

The Ripple Effect

What strikes Chris most about his role at Sunly is the tangible difference they're making in people's lives. Each installation represents not just kilowatts of clean energy, but a family's step toward energy independence, a community's reduced carbon footprint, and a concrete investment in the future. With thousands of installations in PEI and rapid expansion into Ontario markets, Sunly's impact continues to grow.

Chris reflects on the daily outcomes from his career transition: helping people save money, achieve energy stability, and "feel that feeling of being self-sufficient."

For Chris Spurrell, the journey from solar-curious homeowner to renewable energy advocate illustrates a larger truth: sometimes the best stories aren't just about the destination, but about finding purpose in helping others reach theirs. At Sunly, they're not just installing solar panels—they're creating believers, one rooftop at a time.

3 Questions to test if Insight Stories might be for you:

Waiting for the Google review?

✅ If it’s 5 ⭐️ that’s great.

❌ Reviews can be a lightening rod for discontent. And a poor way to find out points for improvement.

Already collecting data via surveys?

✅ If people participate, surveys can be good for capturing quick quantitative data.

❌ Data collection can project a cool and impersonal impression of your business. It doesn’t extend relationships.

Are your clients already advocates?

✅ In a perfect world, your clients advocate by sharing their success stories in genuine ways.

❌ Bad news still travels faster. And testimonial quotations are all too commonly faked.

Look for proven strengths in client-facing storytelling roles:
